"Globally, around 330 million people live without shelter on any given night."
-United Nations estimates (as summarized in Wikipedia's global homelessness acticle.)
Many local libraries offer free daily prints & copies. Check with your local library for their policy. You can easily print & copy these maps at no cost, to share with the homeless community for free.
When distributing MapHelp maps, put personal safety first by teaming up with a partner or staying in public, well-lit areas, and trust your instincts if a situation feels unsafe. Approach calmly and respectfully, offering the map as a gift and moving on if it’s declined. A simple explanation like, “This shows shelters, food, and help nearby. it’s free to keep,” is all you need to say. If helpful, you can circle a location or mark where the person is standing, but avoid writing down personal information. Keep interactions short, respectful, and focused on practical help. Afterward, take time to rest, hydrate, and process any difficult encounters with a partner or colleague. Putting the map in a sandwich-size plastic bag to protect it from rain and wear is also advised when giving maps. Encourage recipients to ask for directions if unsure how to get to a location.
MapHelp was created to be a clear global guide to local support.
The aim of this project is simple. Make public and private social services easier to find and easier to share. MapHelp encourages new methods and tools to address social issues and challenges yet to be overcome, helping communities find better ways to support those in need and grow them into strong community members who help our cities thrive.
